Hubballi: Theatreperson Yashavant Sardeshpande, 60, passed away in Bengaluru on Monday morning due to a heart attack. He is survived by wife Malati and daughter Dosti alias Kalpashri.Sardeshpande presented his comedy plays as also certain movies in north Karnataka lingo, especially the Dharwad dialect. He was born to parents Sridhar and Kalpana on June 13, 1965, in Vijayapura.He studied at Kendriya Vidyalaya No.1 and New English School here. He pursued an apprenticeship at Kirloskar in Harihar and a diesel mechanic course at KSRTC depot. Being interested in theatre, Sardeshpande joined Neenasam Heggodu repertory in 1985-86. He directed plays and tele-dramas for All India Radio and Doordarshan. He travelled across north and south India to learn theatre techniques. He joined as a programme officer at the South Central Zone Cultural Centre in Nagpur, where he met theatre artiste Malati. He married her in 1991. He joined courses on script writing and administration in cultural centres at New York University in 1996.His play 'All the Best' (inspired by a Marathi play) was a big hit -- it was staged across Karnataka, and in USA, Qatar, Bahrain, Muscat. Sardeshpande played a crucial role in organising cultural events of national importance like the Republic Day parade in Delhi, the 8th Asian Track and Field Meet, national painting competition, et al. Since 1999, he performed one-man shows in Karnataka. 'Sahi Ree Sahi', 'Dil Maange More', and other plays were successful. He authored about 16 plays and worked for many Kannada TV serials, including 'Paapa Pandu' and 'Dashaavataara'. He also worked for 'Kannadada Kotyadhipati', anchored by actor Puneeth Rajkumar. Sardeshpande acted in Kannada, Marathi, and Hindi films. He was honoured with a state award for his dialogues for Kannada movie 'Raama Shaama Bhaama'. He also produced 'Haadu Hakki Haadu' (children's movie) and got an award for the same. He was also honoured with Rajyotsava Award in 2010.He built 'Adi Ranga Theatre School' (ARTS) at Rayanal Lake in Hubballi on 36acre land provided by Hubballi-Dharwad Urban Development Authority. Union minister Pralhad Joshi, MLA Mahesh Tenginakai, legislative council chairman Basavaraj Horatti, and others have mourned the death of Sardeshpande.
