Mumbai: The death toll in the Kandivli catering unit gas leak fire rose to four on Monday after the business owner, Shivani Gandhi (52), succumbed to her injuries in hospital. Police have registered an FIR against her and commercial unit owner, Yogendra Mistry.On Sept 24, a fire broke out at the commercial unit located on Akurli Road in Kandivli (E) between 8am and 8.30am due to a gas cylinder leak. Six women and a man, all working at the unit, suffered serious burns, including Gandhi. Three of the seven victims -- Putani Gautam (22), Raksha Joshi (47), and Neetu Gupta (31) -- succumbed to their injuries on Sunday.Police have applied charges against Mistry and Gandhi under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for an "act endangering life or safety of others" and "negligent conduct with respect to fire". No arrest has been made, Samta Nagar police said.According to the FIR, the commercial unit belonging to Mistry was rented out to Gandhi for running her business, 'Shivani Caterers', around 15 days before the incident occurred. The unit had six domestic and two commercial gas cylinders. Three commercial stoves and one domestic stove were found. But police did not come across any firefighting and fire safety equipment.According to the FIR, Mistry had neither drawn up a rental agreement with Gandhi nor had he checked if she possessed a business licence. No attention was given to taking any safety measures after the fire broke out. Police intimation, which is mandatory while renting out properties, was also not done. The fire department said that the caterer did not have requisite fire permissions for running operations.Recounting the incident, one of the injured staffers, Durgavati Gupta (35), told police they were cooking around 8.15pm when there was a sharp odour. Sensing that it was a gas leak, all of them stepped out. Then a co-worker, Manaram Kumavat (55), went back inside by himself. He told the others that he had checked the gas cylinders and there would be no further leak. The staff then went back inside, but the odour was still there. Even as the women were complaining to Kumavat of the leak, a fire broke out. The fire was extinguished in half an hour.While Gandhi suffered 70% burns, Gautam and Joshi both suffered 90% burns, and Neetu suffered 80% burns. Kumavat, Durgavati and their co-worker, Janaki Gupta (39) are battling their injuries in different hospitals. Kumavat has suffered 40% burns and has been admitted to Airoli Burns Centre. Janaki suffered 70% burns, while Durgavati suffered 85%-90% burns in the incident.

Mumbai: A 14-year-old boy, angry after his mother asked him to go to tuition instead of playing, allegedly committed suicide by jumping from his residential building.
