Mumbai: Families of the deceased in the Kandivli gas leak fire are grappling with unanswered questions about responsibility, as the owner of the catering business also succumbed to her injuries. Shivani Gandhi, 35, who suffered burns over 95% of her body, died on Monday at National Burns Centre in Airoli.Her death raised the toll to four. On Sunday, three others, Putani Gautam (22), who sustained burns over 90% of her body; Raksha Joshi (47), also with 90% burns; and Neetu Gupta (31), with 80% burns, were pronounced dead.Two more victims remain in critical condition at the Airoli centre. Janaki Gupta (39), with burns over 70% of her body, and Durgavati Gupta (35), with 85-90%, were slated for skin graft surgeries that were postponed because of their fragile condition. Another patient, Manaram Kumavat (55), who sustained burns over 40% of his body, is out of danger and continues to receive treatment."Chances of survival for patients with 80-90% burns are low, but we try our best. Until last night, we saw some signs of improvement in the latest patient to succumb, but her condition soon deteriorated," said Dr Sunil Keswani, head of the burns centre.Relatives of the victims said they plan to raise their issue with Gandhi's husband, Mitul, in the coming days. "On paper, Shivani was the owner, but we believe he was involved in the operations," said Sandeep Gupta, Raksha's son-in-law. "The next course of action will be decided collectively by the families, as it could be a case of negligence. Since Shivani has also passed away, we are giving her family some time on humanitarian grounds before the discussion," he added.Mitul was unavailable for comment. Shivani is survived by two daughters. Police have registered an FIR in the matter.Sandeep Gupta worries about the time ahead for all the families. Raksha's 19-year-old son, Heet, suffers from haemophilia, a rare blood disorder that prevents blood from clotting properly. Even minor injuries can lead to prolonged or internal bleeding, and patients with severe forms of the condition often require preventive factor injections several times a week.Public hospitals frequently run short of these medicines, forcing families to purchase them privately at high cost. Raksha, who earned a mere Rs 40 an hour while working at Shivani Caterers, used to at times procure them despite high costs for her son.
Bengaluru: Bengaluru Police have arrested Nikita Singhania, the wife Atul Subash who died by suicide, along with her mother, Visha Singhania, and brother, Anurag Singhania, in connection with an abetment of suicide case.
