Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday announced that the state govt has formally initiated the process to invoke the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with Singapore in connection with the death of singer Zubeen Garg, paving the way for cross-border legal cooperation."We have requested MHA to invoke the MLAT. Once invoked, this will ensure full cooperation from Singaporean authorities -- giving us access to case details and assistance to bring back the accused and secure justice. The next 48 to 72 hours are going to be critical," Sarma said in reference to one of the key accused, Shyamkanu Mahanta, the organiser of North East India Festival where Zubeen had gone to perform.The CM said a team of the Assam Police SIT is already in Singapore.On the other absconding accused, Siddharth Sharma, who was Zubeen's manager, the CM said, "We have leads on his likely whereabouts. If he does not surrender within the stipulated time, we will have to bring him, and arrangements are in place."The SIT has issued notices to 13 people, including Mahanta and Sharma, asking them to appear by Oct 6.Assam Police director general Harmeet Singh said, "Let us follow the legal process or else the case will become weak in the court. Let the SIT do its work and all should support the team."A nine-member SIT led by special DG (CID) MP Gupta was constituted to probe Garg's death by drowning in Singapore on Sept 19. Singh said the investigation has made significant progress and findings will soon be submitted to the court."This is a very important SIT, and the investigations have progressed far. The findings will be submitted in the court of law," Singh told reporters. "The inquiry will reach its final conclusion, it is my promise," he added."Lookout notices have already been issued against Mahanta and Sharma in the singer's death case," Singh confirmed. "The accused will be brought back to the state and there should not be any doubt about it. It is a legal process. If they do not respond, we will take the next step of the law which will be much harsher."Zubeen had travelled to Singapore to perform at the North East India Festival.
