"Ernie Stevens Jr. was more than a chairman; he was a warrior, a statesman, and a champion for all of Indian Country," IGA's executive director said in a statement. Indigenous communities across Minnesota and Wisconsin are mourning the loss of Ernest L. "Ernie" Stevens Jr., longtime chair of the Indian Gaming Association, who also was a staunch advocate of tribal sovereignty. Stevens died suddenly on Friday at the age of 66. He was a citizen and former councilman of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin.
