Naraingarh (Ambala): "The next war will be fought with thousands of drones," said Western Command chief Lt Gen Manoj Kumar Katiyar, as the Indian Army pushes to make drone operation a core skill for every soldier. Lessons from Operation Sindoor, where unmanned systems were deployed extensively, accelerated a doctrinal shift, with drones now treated not as support tools, but as frontline force multipliers.According to Katiyar, drones were used extensively in Operation Sindoor, teaching hard lessons that were folded into training and procurement. "From Operation Sindoor, we learned a lot... That is why we have placed a strong focus on drones. Now every soldier must also know how to operate a drone," he said, noting that post-Sindoor inductions include higher-end systems and beefed-up drone-warfare training."In the next war, requirement for drone use will increase significantly. Thousands of drones will be needed," he said, outlining a rapid shift in doctrine that treats unmanned systems not as niche support tools, but as frontline force multipliers.Gen Katiyar was speaking on Monday at the Army's field firing range near Naraingarh area of Ambala district in Haryana during exercise 'Vayu Samanvayak', demonstrating the integration of drones, counter-drone systems, and unmanned platforms in live conditions.Sharing details about the ongoing exercise, he said the Army practised contact battles across 5km areas and is doubling down on research and development. "This time our training is heavier than before because we plan to punish the enemy more severely than previously," the commander warned, with a harder-edge posture tied to technological advantage.He said the Army was moving to integrate unmanned aerial systems across every arm -- infantry, armoured formations, and even logistics. "Drones will be used by every arm and service -- infantry, armoured units, and even for supplies,' he added, signalling that drone operations would no longer be the preserve of a few specialised units.Crucially, the Western Command is pushing for domestic self-reliance. "Our objective is to be able to fabricate drones ourselves with the help of the local industry," Lt Gen Katiyar said. The Army has already collaborated with the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL) to develop drone ammunition, and local industry has helped induct higher-end platforms capable of carrying 20-50 kg payloads and beyond.The Western Command is not only building attack capability, but also defences. "We have also developed counter-drone systems, and some more counter-drone equipment are being prepared," Katiyar said, claiming that in Operation Sindoor, counter-drone and air-defence systems destroyed every hostile drone that crossed over. That dual focus -- offensive swarms and layered defeat mechanisms -- reflects a doctrine aimed at both using and denying unmanned dominance to an adversary.Katiyar said most of the drones used in the exercise in Naraingarh were attack drones carrying ammunition. Replying to a question, he said, "Regarding our high-end drones, we are ahead in manufacturing. However, those were not demonstrated here today, and only tactical drones having short range were demonstrated."The two-sided joint exercise called 'Vayu Samanvay' was conducted at Naraingarh field firing ranges to validate the efficiency of indigenous drones and their employment in a contested electronic warfare environment. The exercise, conducted under the aegis of the Western Command, demonstrated the capability of the Indian Army to undertake tactical-level offensive operations by its own unmanned aerial systems (UAS) in a contested environment for securing operational objectives and destruction of targets, as well as the effectiveness of its own counter-UAS systems in a complex battlefield scenario.The exercise highlighted the operational preparedness of its own troops and underscored their capability to innovate solutions, modify tactics, and procedures amidst evolving battlefield challenges. The exercise also featured an impressive display of a wide range of drones from across the industry, including several cutting-edge indigenous platforms, underscoring India's growing self-reliance and technological prowess in the unmanned systems domain.
