Mysuru: The ongoing social and educational survey conducted by the Backward Classes Commission has run into multiple hurdles in the twin districts of Mysuru and Chamarajanagar, causing significant delay in data collection. Launched on Sept 22, the survey -- intended to cover 12.6 lakh families across the twin districts within 15 days -- has made only limited progress. The survey is expected to be completed by Oct 7. Despite being the home turf of chief minister Siddaramaiah, enumerators are facing technical challenges such as mobile network issues and slow servers while uploading data using a mobile application.In Mysuru city and district, enumerators must cover 10,12,817 households. Though the enumerators are making door-to-door visits and gathering data through a 60-point questionnaire provided via a mobile app, they face constant issues. Several houses, identified using electricity RR number stickers, were found vacant or locked during visits. Enumerators are also required to upload a self-declaration form confirming their visits. However, technical glitches are affecting this process. Adding to the challenges, many residents are hesitant or refuse to provide information such as ration card details and Aadhar numbers.Frustrated by server issues and other setbacks, several enumerators involved in the survey held a snap protest at Mysuru City Corporation on Saturday."As many residents are not willing to share information, I barely cover one to five households between 10am and 4pm," said one of the enumerators in Raghavendra Nagar, Mysuru. "The district administration has assigned the task of covering 240 households to each enumerator," she said.Among the 2.6 lakh families identified for the survey in neighbouring Chamarajanagar district, enumerators, most of whom are govt school teachers, have so far covered only 7,003 families.As nearly half the district is covered by forests, most households are located in forest fringe villages and hilly areas where network connectivity is poor or non-existent, further aggravating data upload delays. Speaking to TOI, Chamarajanagar deputy commissioner Shilpa Nag said her office has initiated all measures for the completion of the survey within the stipulated time. "Technical issues were flagged to the authorities concerned to help expedite the survey," she said.
