Chennai: A day after the stampede at actor-politician Vijay's rally in Karur, TVK on Sunday approached Madras high court to take suo motu cognizance of the incident.TVK's joint general secretary, C T R Nirmalkumar, and legal wing state coordinator, S Arivazhagan, along with a group of lawyers, made an urgent mention before Justice M Dhandapani at his official residence on Greenways Road, Chennai."We have requested the judge to take up suo motu cognizance of the incident and direct the authorities to preserve the CCTV footage recovered from the site in view of allegations of inadequate arrangements and police protection provided for the rally," they said."The judge consented to take up the case for hearing at 2.15 pm on Monday at the Madurai bench of the HC as Karur falls under the jurisdiction of the Madurai bench," they added.Meanwhile, A Senthilkannan, a resident of Karur who participated in Saturday's rally at Karur, approached the HC seeking to forbear the TN DGP from granting Vijay and TVK permission to conduct any further public meetings, rallies or political gatherings until the stampede incident was fully investigated, responsibility fixed, and effective safety protocols ensured.Initially, Justice N Senthilkumar agreed to hear the case at 4.30 pm on Sunday at the principal bench in Chennai. However, the hearing was cancelled later as the petitioner sought to implead in the petition moved by TVK, which is already pending before another bench.Since the HC is currently on Dussehra holidays, the hearing of regular petitions already pending in the court will not be permitted. Additionally, the petition was not officially filed and numbered until 4.30 pm on Sunday.Justice Senthilkumar also declined to allow another urgent mention made by BJP councillor Uma Anandan seeking a CBI probe into the incident and suggested she move the plea as a PIL before the first bench of the court after the vacation.
