Ponda: Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) is facing an uphill task of treating the waste generated in its jurisdiction after the Saligao waste treatment plant refused to accept waste from the town.The Ponda council has its waste treatment facility at Kerye, Khandepar, that can treat around 6.5 tonnes of waste per day. The remaining, around 10 tonnes of wet waste, was being sent to the Saligao facility for treatment. However, this, along with the waste from the Curti-Khandepar panchayat, will now be sent to the Cacora waste treatment plant.PMC chairperson Anand Naik said that the civic body will have to pay Rs 16,000 per day to the Cacora plant to treat the waste. In these circumstances, PMC has asked the Curti-Khandepar panchayat to share a part of its financial burden of sending the waste to the Cacora facility.The issue was discussed in a PMC meeting and the councillors have resolved to ask Curti panchayat to pay a part of the amount spent by the council to transfer the waste to the Cacora facility. This arrangement would be only for a specific time as the new garbage treatment unit of the council at the Kerye Khandepar site would be completed in three months, the PMC chairperson said.A meeting with the panchayat officials has already been convened, Naik added.The Saligao facility, which is meant only for North Goa, has refused to treat the waste from Ponda as it comes under South Goa. The Saligao plant finds itself overburdened with more and more waste coming in from various panchayats, much higher than its original capacity.
