The longer-term implications are complex. India is achieving its fuel-blending targets, but at the cost of crop diversity. India's farmlands are in the middle of a quiet-but-dramatic shift. New government data show that crops linked to the ethanol economy -- sugarcane and maize -- are steadily expanding, while oilseeds like soybean, a critical crop for the country's edible oil security, are losing ground. This pattern is visible across states, being reinforced by policy incentives guaranteeing demand for ethanol feedstock. Bump for some The Ministry of Agriculture's latest weekly progress report explains the trend. As of September 19, sugarcane covered 59.07 lakh hectares, compared to 57.22 lakh hectares last year. The increase of over 1.8 lakh hectares, or 3.2 per cent, may not sound large, but it is a significant shift in a crop as land- and water-hungry as sugarcane. The trend gets starker when it comes to maize. The same dataset shows that maize acreage has surged this kharif season, hitting about 95 lakh hectares, nearly 10.6 lakh hectares more than the year before. Compared to the five-year average, the jump is more than 11 per cent, according to the Agriculture Ministry's own crop monitoring data. This is not just a seasonal quirk. It aligns with the government's long-term ethanol plan, which explicitly allows using maize and surplus rice for distilleries. Decline for others On the other hand, oilseeds tell the opposite story. For example, the coverage of soybeans in mid-September stood at 120.4 lakh hectares, down from 126.3 lakh hectares in 2024. That is a year-on-year fall of nearly six lakh hectares, a decline that confirms that maize is eating into traditional soybean belts. This soybean erosion is a red flag for a country that imports more than half its edible oil. Why are farmers shifting? The answer is, of course, economics. The ethanol market is real and paying. Oil companies are already pouring almost a fifth of ethanol into the petrol we buy. The Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell's latest consumption report shows 19.8 per cent blending for August 2025 and an average of 19.1 per cent for November 2024-August 2025. An official compendium from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency confirms that maize has become the single largest feedstock for ethanol. Sugarcane was already one of the few crops with assured procurement through mills. Now, it offers a growing ethanol outlet. Both feed demand and distilleries back maize. Conversely, soybeans suffer from volatile prices and the absence of a strong procurement mechanism. The cost of it Sugarcane's expansion adds pressure on groundwater, a concern flagged in NITI Aayog's 2023 report on sugar and water use. On average, one kilogram of sugar requires about 1,500-2,000kg of water, making it a water-intensive crop. The longer-term implications are complex.
