Monitoring panel to be formed to prevent rabies in Coimbatore: MP | Coimbatore News - The Times of India

Coimbatore: Coimbatore MP Ganapathy P Rajkumar said a monitoring committee headed by him with the district collector and the Coimbatore Corporation commissioner as members will be formed to prevent rabies and enhance sterilization of stray dogs in the district.Citing TOI's report (Sept 25) on 25 dogs testing positive for rabies in two months in the city and its suburbs, Rajkumar said on Thursday that the committee will include stakeholders and members from govt departments, such as animal husbandry, and animal welfare organizations. Rajkumar said the corporation is actively working on expanding the sterilization process by setting up additional animal birth control (ABC) centres. "This move will control the stray dog population and reduce the risk of rabies," he added. Collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar said the district administration will focus on increasing the number of ABCs and vaccinating stray dogs, particularly in areas where rabies cases were reported. Plans are underway to procure more anti-rabies vaccine vials from the open market to meet the growing demand. The animal husbandry department has also been requested to supply additional vaccine vials this year. Discussions are on to improve sterilization protocols in collaboration with the animal husbandry department. Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran reassured the public saying that the situation is under control, with no human rabies cases reported so far. In all, 287 dogs have been vaccinated against rabies using the ring vaccination method in hotspot areas in the past two months.
