Imphal, Sep 16 (UNI) Heavy monsoon rainfall has severely affected thousands of people in Manipur. Roads have been cut off, the power supply snapped, embankments breached in multiple places, and many low-lying areas are submerged. Schools and colleges in the valley districts have been ordered closed. The India Meteorological Department issued warnings this morning of continued heavy to very heavy rainfall in the Northeast, including Manipur, raising fears of further flooding and landslides. Evacuation and rescue operations are being carried out by local clubs and community groups. Over the past week, successive spells of heavy rain have caused persistent flooding, particularly in Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Kakching, Senapati, and Thoubal districts. Rivers such as Thoubal, Nambul, Iril, Imphal, and others have risen above danger levels. Heavy monsoon rainfall over the past few days has triggered widespread flooding across valley districts in Manipur. Thousands of people have taken shelter in community halls and relief centres. A major flood event in May 2024, triggered by the aftermath of Cyclone Remal, had already devastated large parts of Manipur. Over 188,143 people were affected, and at least 24,265 houses were damaged. The Assam Rifles conducted rescue operations under "Operation Jal Rahat", evacuating more than 6,500 people, including women and children, from affected localities such as Dewlahland, Thangal Bazar, North AOC, and Mantripukhri. Floods caused overflowing rivers, breached riverbanks in parts of Imphal East, and extensive inundation in valley areas. In 2023, Manipur also suffered flood events. One instance involved heavy rains and flooding causing disruptions in Imphal Valley and other areas, including inundation of localities and houses. However, precise official figures of the number of affected people or damaged houses were not widely reported compared to 2024 or 2025. The current floods in Manipur (mid-September 2025) are part of a pattern of increasing flood risk during monsoon periods. Every year saw similarly severe events, suggesting an urgent need for improved flood mitigation (embankment repair, early warning systems, and drainage improvements). The flood has been largely due to a massive influx of illegal immigrants and an increase of over 1000 new villages, especially in the Kangpokpi district. Massive deforestation and poppy plantation by immigrants in the district have changed the ecosystem, according to an expert. All the major rivers start from Kangpokpi district.
