New Delhi, September 15, 2025 - In a late evening relief for taxpayers, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has once again extended the due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26. The ITR filing deadline, which was originally set for 31st July 2025 and later extended to 15th September 2025, has now been further extended by one more day. Taxpayers can now file their returns till 16th September 2025. In its official statement, the CBDT said the extension was being provided to ease the compliance burden on taxpayers and confirmed that a formal order/notification will follow separately. The extension applies to all taxpayers whose returns were due by 31st July 2025. The board, however, clarified that this is only a short relief and urged taxpayers to complete their filings at the earliest. This comes as the second extension in less than two months, as many individuals and businesses had been facing challenges in completing their filings on time. The announcement was made through a press release by V. Rajitha, Commissioner of Income Tax (Media & Technical Policy) and official spokesperson of CBDT.
