Thiruvananthapuram: In a move that surprised many Congress leaders and perhaps defied the strong diktats of opposition leader V D Satheesan, Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil attended the first day of the assembly session on Monday. There are reports that Mamkootathil attended the House with support from a few leaders within the party.Mamkootathil's entry to the assembly was a personal setback to Satheesan. This was evident when Satheesan chose not to respond to the media. Later, even during KPCC leadership meeting, he wasn't ready to speak.Though party leadership claims to have given no message to Mamkootathil not to attend the session, it has undoubtedly given jitters to UDF benches in the assembly. The ruling front is set to corner them in the House if Mamkootathil attends the session regularly.Mamkootathil arrived in a private vehicle with Youth Congress Thiruvananthapuram district president Nemom Shajir and a few other Youth Congress functionaries. In the House, he was seated in the opposition side's last seat of the backbench where former MLA P V Anwar sat after being moved out of LDF. Notably, there were no significant reactions to his arrival from both the treasury benches and UDF side. He entered the floor of the House when chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan was paying tributes to former chief minister V S Achuthanandan.It was interesting to note that none of the Congress MLAs inside the House met or spoke with Mamkootathil. He left the floor of the House before the session ended and went to MLA hostel. From there, while returning to the legislative assembly, SFI activists blocked Mamkootathil's car in protest.Later, Mamkootathil told the media that he hadn't defied any party directive by attending the assembly session. He added that though he was suspended from the party, he would remain a party worker till the last.However, he refused to comment on the cases against him and the audio tapes that surfaced. He remained mum when asked if he would attend the House session in the coming days.In the evening, the leadership met at KPCC headquarters to discuss the latest political developments. Though the meeting didn't discuss Mamkootathil's suspension, the leaders came out strongly against cyber attacks against some functionaries after the suspension.
