New Delhi: Police claimed to have pieced together the sequence of events of the crash that killed senior finance ministry official Navjot Singh on Saturday afternoon.According to cops, the BMW had five occupants -- Gaganpreet Makkad was driving, her daughter (6) was sitting in the front, and her husband Parikshit, son (4) and the domestic helper were in the rear seat. They were travelling from their Gurgaon home to Gaganpreet's parental home in GTB Nagar.Cops have obtained CCTV footage and corroborated it with the mobile videos shot by passersby and witness statements that suggest the BMW hit the divider, overturned, and hit Navjot Singh's bike, prompting it to collide with a bus passing by.Gaganpreet, who was arrested Monday, told police she left her injured daughter to save Navjot and his wife, sought help from a van driver, Mohammad Gulfam, and along with him, took the injured couple to a hospital. She said her husband stayed back with the children and later went home. Asked why she went to a hospital nearly 22km away, Gaganpreet told cops it was the only facility she was familiar with, as her daughter was admitted there during the pandemic. The victim's family, however, did not buy this argument. Singh's cousin Shailendar said, "If she made any mistakes -- whether before the accident due to reckless driving or afterward, intentionally or accidentally -- and if police find this during the probe, she must be held accountable. The standard protocol in any accident, especially when attempting a rescue, is to take the injured to the nearest hospital equipped to handle emergencies. If they didn't do that, I don't know why, but honestly, it was the wrong decision."Mohammad Gulfam, who took the victims to the hospital, told TOI he was returning home to Sultanpuri in an empty van after completing a delivery in Faridabad when he saw the accident and the injured people. He said without waiting for an ambulance, and while others were busy recording videos, he took them to a hospital."The injured people were not in a condition to speak much. A woman also got in and gave me an address. I assumed she was a relative of the injured, so I took her to the hospital as well," he said.It was only later Gulfam learned that she was involved in the accident herself. He told cops that during the journey, Gaganpreet was on the phone requesting help.Dr Shakuntala Kumar, director of Nulife Hospital, GTB Nagar, told reporters that around 2pm Sunday, a medico-legal case related to the accident was brought to the hospital. "First aid was immediately administered and police were informed. A man, aged between 50 and 57, was brought in dead. His wife, who had sustained injuries but was vitally stable, was also admitted. After necessary stabilisation, she requested to be shifted to another hospital for further management," she said.According to Dr Kumar, Gaganpreet also received care in the hospital's emergency department. "The patient was discharged in a stable condition after observation and treatment... We ensured the necessary medical protocol has been followed, and each patient was given timely and appropriate care," she said.
