Chennai: Chief minister M K Stalin launched 'Anbu Karangal' scheme for children without parents in Tamil Nadu, and said DMK considered politics service to people rather than a luxury."Some presume that politics is about coming to power, enjoy the benefits of being in power, implement a few fancy schemes and get ready for the election with an eye on power. But for DMK, being in politics is more about responsbility than being in power," Stalin said at the launch of the scheme on Monday, marking the birth anniversary of the late chief minster C N Annadurai. Stalin said the scheme provided monthly monetary assistance of 2,000 till they reach 18 years of age to children who have lost both parents or have lost one parent and the other is unable to take care of them. A total of 6,082 students were identified as beneficiaries under the scheme. Once they reach 18, they will be given admission to a college, and training will continue to be provided."Politics is service to people. It is hard. For us, there is no luxury in it," he said. Stalin said that was the reason for him to travel across the state. "You have been witnessing our work. In the mornings, I used to interact with the public in a place and in the evenings, I used to interact with the people in another place that is hundreds of kilometres away," Stalin said.Responding to criticism of opposition parties, Stalin said, "Not everything is done for vote politics. We are implementing several social welfare schemes such as the morning breakfast scheme for students, distributing monetary benefits to children who lost their parents in COVID and so on to hand hold people and to uplift them in society."
