Nagpur: The central govt recently amended the Goods and Services Tax (GST), with varying GST rates imposed on different components of the paper industry. The Paper Traders Association has requested the removal of this disparity and implementation of flat 5% GST on all paper products. Consequently, the organisation submitted a representation to Chandni Chowk Lok Sabha constituency MP Praveen Khandelwal on Monday.The paper industry directly employs over 500,000 individuals, including traders, transporters, printers, converters, and packaging workers. The industry supports the livelihoods of more than 2,000,000 people. According to the GST amendments effective from September 22, a 5% GST has been levied on paper and paperboard. But GST exemption applies to paper used for notebooks, maps, and similar items, while 18% GST is charged on paper used for calendars, diaries, posters, stationery, and related products. The organisation has advocated a uniform 5% GST on all paper products instead of the current varied taxation.
