Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has given the Public Works Department (PWD) in-principle approval for transplanting the peepal tree near Bole petrol pump, which is obstructing traffic at the landing of the RTO flyover. The transplantation process involves digging the newly-constructed cement road, pointing to lack of coordination between govt agencies. The Gnyanyogi Dr Shrikant Jichkar flyover from RTO to University Campus Square on Amravati Road was inaugurated recently and opened to traffic on Sunday after implementing some safety measures. Barricades have been deployed at the landings on both ends to regulate traffic flow. But the tree on the road near Bole petrol pump poses risk of accidents. TOI has repeatedly highlighted the issue. Civic and PWD officials conducted inspections to resolve the tree hurdle. Rumble strips have been installed on the service road to slow down traffic and prevent vehicles from colliding with those coming from the flyover. Meanwhile, efforts to remove the peepal tree have also begun. NMC deputy commissioner Ganesh Rathod said, "The peepal tree is about 75 to 80 years old. Decision for transplantation has been taken and a letter will be sent to PWD soon. PWD will have to carry out compensatory plantation."Being a large peepal tree, its roots have spread deep. "The newly-constructed cement road will have to be dug up if the tree is to be transplanted. Diverting traffic until the work is completed is also a major issue. The flyover will have to be closed for at least 15 days during this work,' said PWD executive engineer Naresh Borkar while urging NMC to permit tree cutting.
