Animal acquisition at Reliance's Vantara complies with law: SC

New Delhi, Sep 15: The Supreme Court on Monday observed that the acquisition of animals at Vantara, Reliance Foundation's rescue and rehabilitation centre in Jamnagar, is prima facie within the regulatory framework. As reported by LiveLaw.com, a Bench of Justices Pankaj Mithal and PB Varale referred to the findings of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by former judge J Chelameswar, which found no foul play in the transfer of animals, including elephants, from India and abroad. "We are satisfied with the report of the Committee... If the acquisition of an elephant is in accordance with the law, what is the difficulty?" Justice Mithal said. The court said the SIT's report would be accepted, while rejecting attempts to reopen the issue, adding that facilities like Vantara should be seen as "the pride of the country."
