Panaji: The plan of the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) to refurbish Caranzalem fish market has not seen much progress despite six months elapsing since it was proposed. With the corporation still working on the project plan, following which it must be submitted to govt for approval, fish vendors have been left disappointed. They presently operate out of a small shed and some even occupy nearby parking slots due to a lack of sufficient space.Sukum Kankonkar, a vendor at the fish market, said the CCP promised that the fish market would be refurbished this year. "The corporation's officials came to take a look at the fish market and said it would be upgraded. But so far, nothing has happened," said Kankonkar. The fish market comprises 20 vendors, most of whom still sit in the open space due to the restricted size of the shed. "The shed has space only for two to three people. The rest of us sit out in the open," Kankonkar said.Vendors have faced difficulties with the limited infrastructure, especially during the monsoon. Kamal Shirodkar, another fish vendor, said, "It gets very mucky during the rains. Some of us can use the shed for relief, but the vendors out there in the open use umbrellas. How will they make sales like this?"The market also doesn't have a public toilet nearby. Some of them openly defecate or use the wash rooms at their homes. "Our homes are near the market, so we can go at our convenience. But it would be nice to have a toilet here so that we don't have to miss customers during that time," said Shirodkar. The market shed is also getting rusty and wild shrubs are growing on the roof, compromising its structural integrity."An estimate of the refurbishment has been prepared, but it has not been submitted to govt yet," CCP commissioner Clen Madeira told TOI.
