Srinagar, Sept 15: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Monday said the national highway's closure is affecting trade and daily life. He added that the highway falls outside his government's domain and that responsibility lies with the central government. "This highway is under the jurisdiction of the Government of India. If they are unable to keep it functional, it should be handed over to us. We are ready to deploy our engineers to assist with repairs," he said while speaking to reporters here. Expressing dissatisfaction with repeated delays, Omar said that they have been patient, despite daily assurances that work would be completed, but it has not happened. He further said that he would call Union Minister Nitin Gadkari to request that the highway be handed over to the state government for repair and reopening for freight movement. On railway services, Omar said a single ceremonial train service would not be enough to meet the needs of farmers and traders. "Launching one train is a symbolic gesture. We appreciate it, but this service must be operated regularly. This will allow fruit growers and traders to transport their goods either by rail or road," he said. "We are thankful that a train has started, but it must run consistently until the highway issue is resolved," he added. Later in the evening, Omar, in a post on X, said that he spoke to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari regarding the highway's condition and the disruption in connectivity along National Highway-44. The Chief Minister said the frustration among fruit growers is understandable as they had shown patience in the initial days, but are now worried as their produce is spoiling due to delays in stabilising the road. "Some concrete steps are expected to be taken within the next 24 hours to address the issue. I will wait for these measures to be implemented before commenting further on the proposed plan of action," the post added. Meanwhile, the CM said the relief granted by the court to Doda MLA Mehraj Malik underscores that his detention under the Public Safety Act was unjustified. He said the court's decision reflects that Malik's actions did not warrant detention under the PSA. "If he had committed an offence serious enough for PSA, he would not have been granted relief by the court. Whatever his mistake, it does not justify arrest under this law. The government must accept this and release him," he said. Welcoming the court's observation, Omar said the police investigation should continue. "The inquiry should proceed as directed by the court. If new findings emerge during the investigation, the court can take appropriate action," he said, adding, "The court has said that the PSA case against him should be withdrawn immediately and he should be released."
