Hyderabad: Following a request from agriculture minister Tummala Nageswara Rao, the Centre has approved an additional 40,000 tonnes of urea for Telangana. Transported via five ships, this shipment adds to the 40,000 tonnes already allocated, bringing the total urea supply for the month to 1,04,000 tonnes.'15-day period key'Minister Tummala met Rajat Kumar Mishra, secretary of the Union ministry of fertilizers and chemicals, in Delhi to ensure allocation and distribution of urea to farmers. He explained that urea imports had fallen short of expectations and urged that the supply be delivered within the next ten days."Urea is crucial for key crops like rice, maize, and cotton that are currently being cultivated in the state. This next 15-day period is critical for the agricultural season. If fertilizers are not available, crops will suffer significant damage. Therefore, we have requested the central govt to ensure a continuous supply of urea," the minister said. Tummala added that 2,00,000 metric tonnes of urea have been requested for this month to offset shortages from previous months. Another 1,00,000 tonnes have been sought for delivery within ten days, with the Union secretary assuring 80,000 tonnes would arrive this week. Orders have been placed for 40,000 tonnes through ships from IPL, CIL, and NBCL, including the Rek Grace (2,700 MT), GN Ruby (8,100 MT), Grace Harmony (7,800 MT), Endeavor (13,000 MT), and Wadi Albostan (8,100 MT).Support for farmers Despite domestic production not meeting demand, the Union secretary has promised to prioritise Telangana through imports, agriculture minister Tummala said, expressing hope that the allocation will reach the state soon, easing the urea shortage and supporting farmers during this critical period.
