Train shooting: Woman passenger testifies in RPF man Chetan Singh quadruple murder trial | Mumbai News - The Times of India

Mumbai: In the trial against dismissed Railway Proection Force (RPF) constable Chetan Singh, a quadruple murder accused, the prosecution on Monday concluded the deposition of a woman passenger who travelled on the train with her children in July 2023. In court, she identified the accused, who was presented via video conference from jail, and said she was forced to chant "Jai Mata Di." She also said he was armed with a rifle."When I saw a man wearing a police uniform coming towards me, he was holding a rifle," said the witness, a 38-year-old homemaker. "Then he asked, 'Iss desh mein rehna to hai Jai Mata Di bolo.' (If you want to stay in this country, say Jai Mata Di.)" The woman stated that she complied quietly, but he asked her to say it loudly, or else he might shoot her. She said she caught the rifle, which the accused pointed towards her, raised it upwards, and questioned the man's identity. In response to questions posed in her examination by the public prosecutor, Sudhir Sapkale, she said she was warned not to touch the rifle, or he would shoot her. She released the rifle, and the man walked away, the witness testified. She said the incident left her scared.The trial is before additional sessions judge Y B Pathan at the Dindoshi Sessions Court in suburban Mumbai. During her cross-examination by defence counsel Jaywant Patil, she denied that she was deposing falsehoods. She also volunteered that the accused targeted her allegedly because she was dressed in a burqa. To another question from the defence lawyer, she said it was not true that she identified the accused based on his photos in the media.In her cross-examination by Patil, the witness also said she learnt later that there were concerns raised about the mental health condition of the accused. She admitted in the cross-examination that she could not identify the exact rifle pointed at her from among a bunch of rifles.The witness had deposed that she woke up at 5:30 am and was wearing shoes to go to the train's lavatory when she saw a person, wearing a police uniform, walking into the compartment.The ex-RPF constable is accused of shooting dead his senior colleague, assistant sub-inspector Tika Ram Meena, and three passengers on board the Jaipur-Mumbai Central Superfast Express near Palghar railway station in Maharashtra on July 31, 2023.
