Shimla: The special CBI court here on Monday sent the suspended assistant sub-inspector, Pankaj Sharma, into one-day CBI custody. The ASI was arrested on Sunday in connection with the mysterious death of state power corporation chief engineer Vimal Negi.Sharma has been accused of tampering with a pen drive recovered from Negi's dead body in Bilaspur on March 18, which is key evidence in the case. The high court had handed over the probe to the CBI on May 23.A CBI team arrested Sharma on Sunday from his house in Ghumarwin in Bilaspur district. After questioning, Sharma was presented before the special CBI judge at his official residence in Shimla, who ordered him into CBI custody till Monday. Sharma was again presented before the special CBI judge Monday afternoon, and the CBI sought a five-day remand. However, the court extended his custody for only one more day.Sharma's counsel, meanwhile, moved a bail application on Monday, submitting that a criminal writ petition filed by the suspended ASI's wife was already pending before the high court, in which she had claimed that her husband was kept in illegal police detention under CCTV surveillance after the high court handed over the case to the CBI.The counsel told the special CBI court that the high court directed Sharma's release from detention on Sept 5 when the state police and the CBI submitted that his custody was not required.The counsel further submitted that the charges levelled against Sharma, if proved, attract a maximum seven-year sentence and when Sharma was cooperating with the CBI in the probe, his arrest was not required.The CBI team will again present Sharma in court on Tuesday, when his bail petition would also be heard.MSID:: 123901191 413 |
