Srinagar- Crime Branch Kashmir's has arrested a conman who allegedly posed as a Duty Officer to the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir and duped people of more than Rs50 lakh through fake promises of jobs and land allotments. The accused has been identified as Abdul Majid Mir, son of Abdul Rahim Mir, a resident of Lishtiyal in north Kashmir's Kupwara district. He was apprehended in connection with case FIR No. 10/2025 registered under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code. According to Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Crime Branch, Mir lured unsuspecting victims by introducing himself as a senior functionary in the LG's office. He allegedly assured them of government jobs and land allotment at SDA Colony, Bemina, in return for hefty sums of money. Investigations revealed that he issued forged appointment letters purportedly from the Airport Authority of India as well as fabricated allotment documents claimed to be from the Srinagar Development Authority (SDA). "Mir's acts amount to serious criminal misconduct, involving impersonation, cheating, and forgery," an official said. Based on the collected evidence, police have invoked offences under Sections 419, 420, 467, 468, and 471 IPC. Mir was produced before the Court of Judicial Magistrate 1st Class, Srinagar, which remanded him to five days of police custody for further investigation.
