New Delhi: Aman Sehrawat, a bronze medallist at the Paris Games and one of India's leading prospects in the men's freestyle 57-kg category at the World Wrestling Championships in Zagreb, was disqualified on Sunday after failing to make weight ahead of his opening match. According to sources in the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), Sehrawat exceeded the weight limit by a significant 1.7 kg, an oversight unacceptable given his status as an experienced wrestler. The federation has sought explanations from both Sehrawat and the men's freestyle head coach, Jagminder Singh, regarding the incident. "Aman Sehrawat is likely to face suspension upon return to India. He was a top medal contender at the Worlds. How could he be overweight by 1 kg, 700 gm? Recently, the federation had suspended Neha Sangwan for returning overweight by 700 gm at the Under-20 World Championships, which led to her disqualification from the event. Neha was banned for two years. The yardsticks are the same for everyone. Aman is also likely to face consequences," a WFI official said. According to Indian coaches in Zagreb, Sehrawat fell ill the night before his weigh-in, developing fever, which prevented him from lowering his weight. "He was not feeling well. That's why he couldn't lose weight," a coach told TOI. Sehrawat was scheduled to compete against Vladimir Erogov of North Macedonia in the first round. "When the matter was brought to the WFI's notice by the coaches in Zagreb, they were told that Aman should at least go for weigh-in, as that would mark his participation in the Worlds and he could get the certificate. He was initially reluctant and wanted to show himself injured and submit a medical. In that case, his participation wouldn't have been registered and he would miss ranking points. At that stage, the federation didn't know he was running overweight by close to 2 kg. He was told to go for a weigh-in, even if he wasn't feeling well. It was found that he's one kg and 700 gm overweight. Now, in the list of draws, it will show forfeited against his name," the federation official added. It's been learnt that the government had spent close to Rs 8 lakh on Sehrawat's preparations for the Worlds, arranging for his training, sparring partners and stay in Croatia for the event.Mukul loses bronze match, finishes fifth Mukul Dahiya, who was the only Indian to reach the medal round, lost 0-10 in his bronze match to former world champion, Iran's Kamran Ghasempour, on technical superiority to finish fifth in his men's 86 kg division. Another medal contender Deepak Punia will return empty-handed after Azerbaijan's Osman Nurmagomedov, who had defeated the Indian in the second round, lost his semifinal to bow out.
