New Delhi: The Indian women's hockey team missed out on direct qualification for the Women's Hockey World Cup next year after suffering a crushing defeat against China in the final of the Hockey Women's Asia Cup 2025 on Sunday. China scored twice in the last quarter to beat India 4-1 in the final at the Gongshu Canal Sports Park Stadium in Guangzhou, China and secure the title. With the win, hosts China also qualified directly for the Women's World Cup 2026, which is set to be held in Belgium and Netherlands. China produced a stunning performance in the second half to turn the game on its head and send India crashing out of the tournament. Leading 2-1 at halftime, the hosts upped the ante and ran havoc at India's defence in the final quarter to secure a thumping victory. India took the lead in the very first minute of the game through Navneet Kaur. She converted a penalty corner to help India draw the first blood in the game. However, China bounced back strongly as they went on to score four goals in the game to thrash India comprehensively. Zixia Ou levelled the score for China in the 21st minute in the second quarter, before Hong Li struck in the 41st minute to put the hosts ahead at 2-1. Meirong Zou and Jiaqi Zhong scored a goal apiece in the final quarter to help China complete a 4-1 rout of India in the final. India battled hard and gave their all in search of goals, but China, who conceded only two goals in the entire tournament, held on to their nerves to secure a commanding win after their superb display in the second half.
