Hyderabad: With Maoist influence steadily declining across Telangana, police officials have categorically rejected calls for new peace talks, describing such demands as a stalling strategy aimed at self-preservation. The police top brass maintains that past experiences with Maoist negotiations yielded little tangible progress and that the current focus is on encouraging surrenders and facilitating rehabilitation rather than reinitiating talks. The remarks came in the wake of the surrender of Pothula Padmavathi, a 62-year-old senior Maoist leader from the party's central committee, hailing from Jogulamba Gadwal district. Her decision to lay down arms was reportedly driven by deteriorating health condition. When asked whether the govt plans to engage in fresh peace talks with Maoists, director general of police Jitender pointed to the ineffective outcomes of earlier efforts. "What was achieved from the 2004-05 peace talks with the Maoists under the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh govt? Nothing substantive came out of those discussions. It was only a delaying tactic -- an attempt to save their skin," Jitender said. 'No longer a threat'Supporting this view, additional director general of police, intelligence, B Shivdhar Reddy elaborated on the current landscape. "During the earlier period, Maoism was a grave challenge in India and in undivided AP. That's why the govt initiated talks. But today, Maoism is no longer a significant threat in Telangana, unlike in some other regions. Therefore, entering into new peace negotiations is not on our agenda," he explained.Instead of dialogues that offer no resolution, Telangana's police have been pursuing a structured approach centered on surrender and rehabilitation. Shivdhar Reddy highlighted that a comprehensive Maoist rehabilitation policy, first implemented by the AP govt in 1993, continues to guide efforts to integrate former militants into society. "Thousands of Maoists have surrendered under this policy over the years. We extend support to them -- be it in terms of health care or legal assistance. We work with police departments in other states to facilitate relief from cases registered elsewhere," he said.404 Maoists surrenderThe results have been significant. In 2025 alone, 404 Maoists from Telangana and Chhattisgarh have surrendered, with the majority choosing Telangana as their destination due to its progressive policies. Among them are four state committee members, one divisional secretary, and 34 area committee leaders, underscoring the movement's decline, according to Jitender. "There is no divergence between the state and central govt policies regarding Maoists. Our surrender package ensures that those willing to abandon violence receive every possible support. Coming forward to surrender is the best option for them," he asserted.
