Bengaluru: The pledge to make Bengaluru a drug-free city has taken an interesting with the police brass deciding to cleanse the rot within the force: 11 police personnel, including an inspector, have been suspended for allegedly protecting and promoting drug peddlers in the city.The shocking nexus was exposed when city police recently busted a six-member drug-peddling gang. What followed actually stunned investigators: a few so-called protectors of the law from two police stations were not just aware of the gang's movements, but were also part of their circle. They partied together, took monthly protection money, provided legal logistics when any peddler got caught, and leaked information about possible raids. The suspended cops from Chamarajpet police station are: police inspector T Manjanna, head constables Ramesh and Shivaraj, and constables Madhusoodhan, Prasanna, Shankar Belagali, and Anand. From JJ Nagar station, assistant sub-inspector Kumar, and constables Anand, Basavanagouda, and Mahesh have been suspended.How nexus came to lightThe cleansing operation began last month after RR Nagar police nabbed the gang, led by a peddler named Salman alias Paapa, a resident of Chamarajpet. On questioning, police discovered Salman was not only a habitual offender, arrested many times previously, but also had dared to stock 1,000 Tydol tablets at his residence. These tablets, smuggled from Mumbai, were sold to youngsters, especially students.Salman and his gang would sell one tablet for anywhere between Rs 250 and Rs 300, while each tablet cost them around Rs 40. These Tydol tablets -- prescription opioid painkillers -- are supposed to be sold only against a doctor's prescription. Though not categorised under the narcotic brand, they give a high to those consuming them -- an equal feeling to drugs such as ganja."To our surprise, Salman claimed he had police support in selling the drugs. Initially, we thought he was bragging to mislead us. However, close scrutiny of the mobile phones of Salman and his associates revealed that they were indeed in constant touch with police personnel from Chamarajpet and JJ Nagar. Like police have their jurisdictions to operate, Salman and his gang operated in Chamarajpet and JJ Nagar limits. The cops in question knew their movements, joints where the drugs were sold, and so on," deputy commissioner of police (west) S Girish told TOI.Sensing a big racket, Girish formed a special team led by two assistant commissioners of police -- Chandan Kumar and Bharat Reddy -- both known for their commitment and clean backgrounds. Sub-inspector Naveen from RR Nagar and assistant sub-inspector Devaraj from Chandra Layout were roped in along with a few others. Soon, the two ACPs found the unholy partnership and submitted a report to DCP Girish. The report reached city police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, who decided against putting it on the back burner."It is really shocking and sad to see our men hand in glove with drug peddlers. As materials proved their wrongdoing, we suspended all 11. A departmental inquiry will throw more light on the issue.
