Berhampur: The Kandhamal administration on Saturday suspended Manoranjan Sahu, headmaster-cum-superintendent of a govt residential school, following hospitalisation of eight hostellers after adhesive was allegedly applied to their eyes by fellow students while asleep on Thursday night. The incident came to light the next morning when the victims were unable to open their eyes. Sahu was said to be absent from the school during the time of the incident. He was suspended for gross negligence and failure to ensure the safety and security of boarders. The school, under the SC & ST development department, is located in Phiringia block."We have suspended him for dereliction of duty," said Kandhamal collector Vedbhusan, adding that a formal inquiry is underway. "We will also consider disciplinary action against the students involved," he said. District welfare officer Rabi Narayan Mishra said the affected students -- belonging to classes II to V -- were treated at the district headquarters hospital in Phulbani and discharged on Saturday. "Though they were unable to open their eyes initially, their condition improved by Friday evening. They were kept under observation for a day as per the collector's directive," Mishra said.Preliminary findings suggest that four students applied adhesive to the eyelids of eight others while they were sleeping. A teacher rushed the victims first to the medical centre in Gochhapada, and later to Phulbani for specialised care. Doctors said the adhesive had not entered the eyes, and the injuries were not serious.
