Koraput: A 63-year-old man was killed after a two-storey shop collapsed at the district headquarters town of Koraput on Saturday afternoon.The deceased has been identified as P Lokesh, owner of a shop located adjacent to the Biswasray marketing complex on NH-26. The complex is owned by the Koraput Regional Improvement Trust (KRIT), officials said.Police said that around 1pm, the structure suddenly caved in, trapping Lokesh, who ran a bakery on the ground floor. Rescue teams comprising ODRAF, fire service and police personnel pulled him out from the debris and rushed him to SLN Medical College and Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries."Rescue operations continued for nearly five hours on the suspicion that more people might be trapped, but no one else was found," said Tapan Kumar Naik, additional district magistrate.The ADM added that Rs 30,000 has been sanctioned from the district Red Cross fund for the victim's family, and a recommendation has been sent to the general administration department for further compensation.KRIT officials said that the building was in poor condition and had been earmarked for repairs. "Continuous rain over the past few weeks further weakened the structure, leading to the collapse. The affected stalls were constructed independently outside the main market foundation, so the complex remains unaffected," a KRIT official said.
