NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Friday adjourned hearing for a week on bail plea of activists Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, Gulfisha Fatima and Meeran Haider in the UAPA case related to the larger conspiracy behind the Feb 2020 Delhi riots.A bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and N V Anjaria said it received the files of the case very late and they didn't go through it .The four accused approached the apex court challenging Delhi High Court order which denied bail to nine persons, including them. Khalid and Imam have been in jail for more than five years.Rejecting their bail plea, HC had said that any "conspiratorial violence" under the guise of freedom of speech of citizens could not be allowed."Such actions must be regulated and checked by the state machinery as they do not fall within the ambit of freedom of speech, expression and association," a HC bench of Justices Navin Chawla and Shalinder Kaur had said.Khalid was arrested in Sept 2020 and charged with criminal conspiracy, rioting, unlawful assembly as well as several other offences under the UAPA.Those who were denied bail include Khalid, Imam, Fatima, Mohd Saleem Khan, Shifa Ur Rehman, Athar Khan, Meeran Haider, Abdul Khalid Saifi and Shadab Ahmed.The bail plea of another accused Tasleem Ahmed was rejected by a different HC bench on Sept 2. tnn
