Cops link radical videos, fake ID to Bathinda home blasts; law student watched JeM chief clips before 'testing chemical' ordered online | Chandigarh News - The Times of India

Bathinda: The twin blasts at a home in a village in Punjab's Bathinda district on Wednesday were triggered after a law student attempted to mix a chemical-type material he had ordered online after watching videos of UN-designated global terrorist Maulana Masood Azhar on YouTube, according to Punjab Police.Multiple agencies, including Punjab Police's counter-intelligence wing and an Intelligence Bureau team, are looking into the case that took a new turn after it emerged that Gurpreet Singh, a first-year LLB student at Bathinda Law College, used a fake ID to log on to YouTube to access incriminating material from the Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) chief and had booked a train ticket for Jammu on Sept 10, the day of the blasts. He was supposed to get off at Kathua, said police sources. Bathinda SSP Amneet Kondal told TOI that initial investigations indicated that Gurpreet was indoctrinated and influenced by radicals, particularly from Pakistan. "The police are prioritising the investigation to determine the extent of influence of members of banned outfits on him. We are also examining financial records to see if he received any money," the SSP said. The Bathinda Police have requested the Army to examine the explosive materials delivered through a courier to the 19-year-old at his house in Jeeda village on Wednesday itself. A bomb disposal team from the Punjab Armed Police used a remote-operated vehicle to collect samples from the site of the blasts that occurred within a span of a few hours and injured Gurpreet Singh and his agriculturist father, Jagtar Singh. Police said Gurpreet was attempting to create something from the material when a blast occurred, causing injuries to his hands, legs, and face. When his father returned home after Gurpreet was admitted to the hospital and tried to collect the material again, another, more intense blast occurred, injuring his face and eyes. He was also taken to the hospital, according to the police. SSP Kondal said, "It has come to light that Gurpreet was watching online videos and purchased something from which two blasts occurred at different times. A case under the Explosive Substances Act has been registered." MSID:: 123850005 413 |
