UT plans new ISBT in Manimajra to unclog Madhya Marg | Chandigarh News - The Times of India

Chandigarh: In a bid to ease mounting traffic pressure on Madhya Marg and streamline inter-state bus operations, the UT administration has initiated plans to set up a new interstate bus terminus (ISBT) in Manimajra. The proposed facility will not only serve buses bound for Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, but also offer a much-needed boost to the municipal corporation's revenue stream.According to the latest discussions held among the MC, UT transport, and urban planning departments, the new bus stand will be developed on a 6-acre land parcel under the jurisdiction of the MC.The land pocket is adjacent to the Housing Board Chowk and is currently used as a 'mela' ground where exhibitions, temporary retail markets, and even circuses are held."The land parcel is part of pocket 2 and 3 in Manimajra, spread over 25 acres. The said 6-acre site was reserved for a bus stand long ago, and it was also included in the Chandigarh Master Plan (CMP-2031). However, the plan for a bus stand at the site never took off earlier. Recently, the transport department suggested that the plan should be implemented," said a senior UT official.Officials say the new bus stand will primarily cater to long-route buses running to Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. There will also be space for the tricity bus service. Currently, Manimajra residents have to make do with a makeshift bus stop. This new bus stand will also assist them."Decongesting Madhya Marg is a major reason, particularly the route up to Transport Chowk. Most of the bus traffic, which has to cross the Madhya Marg to reach the ISBT-17, will now be stopped at the new planned bus stand," said the official. As the land is with the MC, officials from the civic body have also been involved in the project planning. "The land will continue to be with the MC. The project will be developed on the PPP model (public-private partnership). The revenues generated from the charges levied for parking buses at the bus stand will be majorly shared with the MC. A definitive revenue plan and modalities for the proposal are being finalised. A survey of the site has already been completed. The consent of the MC will be taken for the project," said the official.Currently, the city has two inter-state bus terminals in Sector 17 and 43. "The ISBT-17 mainly caters to Delhi, Himachal Pradesh (Shimla route, etc.), Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh bus routes. There is also a separate section for local bus service. ISBT-43 caters to most other routes. A bus service connects the two ISBTs," said the official. The administration will also be constructing a new bus stand to cater to the high commuter pressure at the Chandigarh railway station. "Currently, there is a small space carved into the outer area of the railway station from where people can board local buses. There are complaints of inconvenience to the commuters at the bus stand. The location of the bus stand also contributes to the traffic congestion in the area. To resolve these issues, a new bus stand has been proposed," said the official. The proposed bus stand, to be located in the area in front of the railway station, will have space for parking 5-6 local buses of the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU). There will also be public utilities like toilets, and there will be adequate seating arrangements for passengers at the bus stand.
