Gurgaon: The fight against single-use plastics picked up pace in Faridabad on Friday, with HSPCB and MCF conducting a joint enforcement drive.Teams fanned out across Chawla Colony market, Ghanta Ghar Chowk, wine shops, and local kirana stores, issuing 14 challans for stocking banned plastic carry bags and disposable cutlery. Fines totalling Rs1.46 lakh were imposed, and the seized material was taken away by MCF.Officials said the crackdown was conducted to send a strong message to shopkeepers and residents. Haryana has prohibited the manufacture, stocking, distribution, sale, and use of identified single-use plastic items since July 2022, following the Union govt's nationwide notification. Despite the ban, enforcement on the ground has been patchy, with plastic carry bags and cutlery still widely available in markets across the state.An HSPCB official said the board was stepping up drives ahead of the festive season when plastic usage spikes. "We are committed to eliminating single-use plastics from the market. Businesses and citizens must switch to eco-friendly alternatives like cloth and jute bags," the official said.Last year, the state govt reported over 1,200 challans and fines amounting to more than Rs1.5 crore against violators. Officials indicated more coordinated drives with municipal bodies are planned in the coming months.Single-use plastics include plastic bags, straws, cutlery, plates, food and beverage containers, coffee cups and lids, drink stirrers, cigarette butts, balloons and balloon sticks, wrappers, wet wipes, and most plastic packaging designed to be used once and discarded.Around 14% of all plastic waste generated in the state ends up in landfills, according to an annual report published by HSPCB last year. The state recycles approximately 78% of its plastic waste, the report said, but it also pointed out an alarming rise in plastic waste generation - a 38% increase from 129,866.7 tonnes in 2022-23 to 179,406.5 tonnes the next fiscal year.
