Kolkata: Six workers died and five others were severely injured on Friday when a portion of a stone quarry collapsed at Bahadurpur village in Birbhum's Nalhati. Eyewitnesses said the labourers got buried under heavy rocks.Officers said efforts were on to ascertain whether any more workers were trapped in the quarry. The tragedy was a rerun of last October's accident where three labourers had died in a stone mine collapse in Nalhati."The collapse was so sudden that the workers did not get a chance to escape. Around 12 labourers were working in the quarry when it collapsed. They were all buried. As news spread, workers from other stone quarries nearby rushed to the spot and tried to rescue the trapped labourers," an eyewitness said.A district official said the bodies of five workers were recovered from under the debris and six injured workers were taken to Rampurhat Medical College and Hospital. One of the injured died at the hospital and two among the rest were shifted to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital as their condition deteriorated.A large team from Nalhati police station, along with senior govt officials, went to the spot and joined the rescue operation.Sources said heavy monsoon rain, which caused waterlogging in the mines and softened the soil, might have caused the collapse.A relative of an injured said, "The labourers went down to work in the morning. They were digging into the stone surface when soil and rocks suddenly collapsed from above around 2pm, burying all of them."The police are investigating whether the quarry was operating legally following allegations from residents that illegal mining, with minimal safety measures, was rampant in the area."We'll question the mine owner. Stringent action will be taken if we come across any safety lapse," an officer said. "It is too early to comment on the cause of the collapse."The bodies have been sent for post-mortem. Rescue operations are on to ensure that no other workers remain trapped under the debris, the officer said.
