Patiala: A day after a govt team visited the official residence of absconding Sanaur MLA Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra in Patiala to enforce an eviction order, the case took a new turn on Friday, as a court in Patiala directed the Punjab govt and others to file a reply and fixed the next hearing for Sept 17. The estate officer appeared in court, but no immediate action was taken on the eviction order. This allowed Pathanmajra's family a temporary reprieve, said MLA's counsel Simranjit Singh Saggu.Simranjit Kaur, Pathanmajra's wife, had filed the civil suit challenging the govt's eviction notice, claiming undue harassment and political bias. Her counsel argued that the property's use had been in line with state rules and described the move as a deliberate attempt to exert pressure on the MLA for his vocal criticism of the state govt and party's Delhi leadership.The latest bid to evict the MLA's family has deepened allegations of vendetta politics in Punjab. Meanwhile, police have intensified efforts to capture the absconding MLA, who escaped from their custody on Sept 2 in Dabri village of Haryana where Patiala Police had raided his relative's house following allegations of rape, cheating, and intimidation by a Zirakpur-based woman.Advocate Simranjit Singh Saggur revealed that police had now issued arrest warrants for 17 additional individuals -- including Pathanmajra's son Harjashan Singh -- for harbouring and aiding the MLA's escape. He added that previously, 15 aides were booked. Of them, 12 were arrested. While one was discharged for lack of evidence, 11 other were granted bail by the court on Thursday.Police teams, bolstered by the anti-gangster task force (AGTF), have ramped up raids in Patiala and neighbouring states, but Pathanmajra remains at large. The FIR against his alleged aides includes charges of harbouring an offender, with additional provisions from the Arms Act invoked after a police team blamed his supporters for carrying out stone pelting and firing during the MLA's escape. These allegations have been denied by villagers. The MLA, too, had released a video rubbishing this claim.
