Tarn Taran: A Tarn Taran court sentenced Manjinder Singh Lalpura, AAP MLA from Khadoor Sahib, to four years in prison in a 12-year-old assault and molestation case of a Dalit woman.On Wednesday, the court had convicted 11 people, including six policemen, in the case in which a taxi driver and a few other men had assaulted and molested a 19-year-old woman when she and her family members were attending a wedding on Sept 4, 2013. A police team, which arrived at the scene, had also assaulted the woman. The survivor's lawyer, Amit Dhawan, said additional sessions judge Prem Kumar awarded four-year jail term to six others and one-year each to three others. One of the accused, Harvinder Singh, currently lodged in Tihar Jail, did not appear in court. His sentencing is scheduled on Sept 16. Another accused, Paramjit Singh, died during the course of trial. "The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on each of the accused and directed that compensation be paid to the victim as per the law," said Dhawan. Following the pronouncement of sentence, the MLA was taken into custody and sent to jail. The survivor expressed a sense of relief and satisfaction, stating that although delayed, justice was finally served. "It took 12 long years to reach this stage, but the culprits have finally been punished for their actions," she said. At the time of the incident in 2013, Lalpura was working as a taxi driver. In the same year, he joined the AAP, going on to serve as the president of the party's district unit and leading its youth wing. He contested the 2022 assembly elections from Khadoor Sahib assembly constituency in Tarn Taran district on an AAP ticket, winning 55,756 votes and defeating two-time Congress lawmaker Ramanjit Singh Sikki by nearly 16,500 votes.
