Elephant rescued from water tank near Coonoor | Coimbatore News - The Times of India

Udhagamandalam: A wild elephant which had fallen into a water tank near Coonoor was rescued by forest officials after a four-hour long operation on Friday.Around 3.20am locals alerted forest officials that a female elephant had fallen into an abandoned water tank in Kozhikarai tribal hamlet near Coonoor. "We had to break one side of the tank to create an opening for the elephant to climb out," said Ravindhran, Coonoor forest range officer (FRO).After a four- hour long effort, around 7.40am, the pachyderm was finally rescued from the tank. Forest officials then ensured that the elephant returned safely to the forest.Meanwhile, in another incident, an Indian gaur was electrocuted near Uzhavar Sandai in Coonoor town. "A snapped wire from a transformer got entangled with the animal's leg. When it tried to free its leg, the wire came into contact with a live wire killing the gaur, the FRO said. The gaur was later buried in a nearby forest, after an autopsy.
