Ganderbal, Sept 12: The picturesque district of Ganderbal, known for its lush greenery in the Kashmir Valley, is once again witnessing heightened activity as the beekeeping season draws to a close. Local beekeepers, popularly known as Mags, are busy collecting honey boxes after months of patient work that began in early spring. Beekeepers had placed their wooden hives in flower-rich meadows and orchards to ensure maximum nectar collection. With favourable weather and abundant blossoms this year, both the yield and quality of honey have shown marked improvement. "Every year we place the hives outside in late March or April, and by the end of September, honey is ready," said Ghulam Qadir, a local beekeeper. "This year, the rainfall was good, and there were more flowers. The honey is not only more in quantity but also richer in taste." The clean air, fertile soil, and variety of flora make Ganderbal an ideal hub for apiculture. The honey harvested here is supplied to local markets, other districts across Jammu and Kashmir, and even beyond. Some producers have also started tapping into online platforms to reach wider markets. At present, nearly 100 small and large-scale beekeepers are active in the district. While the government has extended training and subsidies to many of them, stakeholders believe that the sector requires greater attention, particularly in terms of infrastructure and marketing. Locals point out that Kashmiri honey is among the purest in the country with notable medicinal properties. With proper support and export-oriented policies, the region could emerge as a key player in India's honey industry. Beekeepers remain optimistic about this year's earnings but stress the need for better packaging, branding, and export mechanisms. If given the right platform, Kashmiri honey can gain national and international recognition, they said, hoping the government will step in to strengthen the sector.
