Kolkata: One year after the RG Kar rape incident, the body of a third-year student of Jadavpur University (JU) in Kolkata, was found in mysterious conditions from a pond inside the campus on Thursday night, once again raising questions about student safety and security inside the campuses in West Bengal. The third-year student's body has been sent for a post-mortem to ascertain the cause of death, the police said. The exact circumstances leading to her death remain unclear, sources said. A purported video, showing students taking her to the hospital, has also surfaced on social media. However, the veracity of the video cannot be verified by ET. The third-year JU student was pursuing English Honours. The incident occurred during an event where a performance by Gaur Das Baul and his group, near Gate No 4, was taking place, which was attended by the students and alumni. The deceased student was also attending the event. "We heard at around 10pm about the incident when her body was brought out from the water. CPR was performed and she was taken to the adjacent KPC Hospital & Medical College, where she was declared brought dead on arrival," a post-graduate English student told ET."The actual cause of death is yet to be ascertained. Investigation is being conducted," a police official said. The incident also brings back the sordid memories of August 2023, when a 17-year-old first-year Bengali Honours student died after falling from the balcony of Jadavpur University's main hostel, allegedly after ragging.
