New Delhi: Delhi University is set to open a physical mop-up round of admissions to fill over 7,000 vacant undergraduate seats. Admissions in this round will be made on the basis of Class XII marks. The decision was taken at the Executive Council (EC) meeting on Friday. Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh suggested that admissions be provided directly by colleges through spot admissions, a proposal that was approved by the EC. Singh said the mop-up round will ensure colleges do not carry forward large numbers of vacancies.According to data, after all main rounds of admissions, 2,488 seats remain vacant under the OBC category, 1,332 under SC, and 1,582 under the ST category. About 2,100 seats are vacant under the unreserved category.The meeting also cleared a proposal to confer an honorary doctorate on Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, a Delhi University alumna who studied sociology at Hindu College between 1991 and 1994. The special convocation is expected to be held in Oct during her visit to India.Among other decisions, the EC passed uniform guidelines for PhD coursework across departments, setting the credit requirement between 12 and 16. It also authorised the Vice-Chancellor to formulate policies for the fourth year of UG courses under the National Education Policy, including setting up research discussion rooms in colleges, and to clarify the distribution of the combined 5% ECA and sports quota among colleges.
