Chandigarh: In a significant development, the Haryana Police have made the first arrest under the newly introduced anti-conversion law after registering a case of illegal religious conversion of a woman in Nuh.The case of forced conversion and exploitation was registered against one Azam, based on the complaint of the victim woman at women's police station in Nuh. The accused was arrested and remanded to custody by the court on Thursday.The arrest is the first under the Haryana Unlawful Conversion Prevention Act 2022. Nuh DSP Prithvi Singh informed that the victim, identified as Sheela alias Kanchan, originally from Dhanpura village in Hamirpur district, Uttar Pradesh, was living in Nuh city with her two children for several years. She married a man named Chhuttan in 2008, who worked as a labourer in Nuh. However, due to Chhuttan's addiction and criminal activities, Sheela's family life fell apart. After Chhuttan was imprisoned for a murder case, he deserted Sheela and the children, said the DSP.Sheela then started living alone with her children in a rented house, supporting them through labour. In 2020, she met Azam from Nuh. According to Sheela, Azam initially promised help and offered to look after her children. Gradually, he began visiting her home, expressed love, and trapped her. Sheela alleged that Azam took her and her children to Noida, then to Panipat, and later to Bhiwadi. During their stay in a rented house in Bhiwadi in June 2020, Azam brought a cleric who forced her to convert. The cleric made her recite the 'kalma', changed her name from Sheela to Saiba, and forcibly married her to Azam, informed Prithvi Singh.The complainant stated that after the conversion, Azam's behaviour changed completely. The victim claimed Azam destroyed the temple in their home and disrespected Hindu deities' idols. She was pressured to wear a burqa, offer namaz, and join the Tablighi Jamaat. She was also subjected to physical assault and verbal abuse multiple times. Moreover, she was forced to consume prohibited meat and pressured to change her name on her Aadhar card and other documents.Later, Sheela discovered that Azam was already married with children. When she reached Azam's village, Malab, his first wife and family attacked her. She somehow escaped to Nuh, but Azam followed her and continued living with her and her children, allegedly seizing her earnings and subjecting her to continuous physical and mental abuse. The victim also accused Azam's brothers-in-law, Kallu and Hakku, of making obscene calls and pressuring her for marriage.The case registered at the women's police station in Nuh includes Sections 323, 354, 295, 418, 120B, 506, and 342 of the Indian Penal Code, Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act 2015, and Section 12(4) of the Haryana Unlawful Conversion Prevention Act 2022, said the police.MSID:: 123854273 413 |
