Pune: A Delhi-bound SpiceJet flight (SG937) on Monday morning returned to Pune because of a technical problem around an hour after it took off, leaving more than 150 flyers on board scared and later hassled. The passengers stressed the aircraft, a Boeing 737, made an emergency landing in the city. The airline and the airport officials denied it.Advocate Vishal Jadhav, flying to Delhi with his wife and daughter, told TOI that the aircraft took off at 6.20am, about 20 minutes after its scheduled departure time. "The plane was full. About an hour after take-off, the pilot announced that there was a technical problem and that they were returning. The aircraft, after flying back for an hour, didn't land. It was airborne for about 20 minutes more," Jadhav said.He said the aircraft finally landed in Pune around 8.30am, when it was scheduled to reach Delhi. "Many passengers asked the cabin crew about the reason behind returning to Pune, but there was no answer. When I asked an airport official why our plane returned to Pune, he told us that the aircraft made an emergency landing," Jadhav said. A SpiceJet spokesperson said the Delhi-bound flight did not make an emergency landing. "SpiceJet flight SG937, operating from Pune to Delhi, returned to Pune shortly after take-off. The flap transit light illuminated following the take-off and the operating crew carried out all necessary checks in accordance with standard operating procedures. As a precautionary measure, the pilots decided to return to Pune. The aircraft landed safely and passengers deplaned normally. Affected passengers are being accommodated on alternate flights or offered full refunds," the spokesperson told TOI.An airport official confirmed the same. "There was no Mayday call from the pilot. Hence, no emergency landing happened," the official said.If a plane's flap transit light remains on after take-off, pilots must be notified because it indicates a potential problem with the flap system of the aircraft. Flaps help a plane to lift off and also act as a speed regulator. Advocate Jadhav, booked on the SpiceJet flight, said, "My daughter had a connecting flight from Delhi to China, and we were going to drop her off. We faced more problems after returning to the Pune airport. All passengers were stranded for close to three hours without any information. The airline cancelled the flight around noon. No one from the airport was there to assist us," he said.Jadhav said, "An argument started around 12.30pm and some refreshments were served. The airline's staff told us that they were trying to arrange for a different aircraft, which was expected to fly in the evening. I opted for a full refund and immediately booked an IndiGo flight as we had to reach Delhi on time. Many other passengers were angry as, according to the airline, the refund would take a week."
