Chandigarh, August 26 (UNI) In a major breakthrough under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann's directive to ensure a secure Punjab, the Amritsar Commissionerate Police have dismantled a cross-border arms smuggling racket, arresting one individual with five advanced 9mm Glock pistols and four magazines, Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav announced on Tuesday. The accused, identified as Amit Singh, a resident of Guru Ki Wadali, Chheharta, Amritsar, was apprehended while attempting to deliver the consignment. Police also seized a black Hero Splendor motorcycle used by the suspect for transporting the weapons. Preliminary investigations reveal that Amit Singh was in contact with Pakistan-based smugglers through his associate, Gurpreet Singh, alias Ginni, who facilitated the smuggling of arms to disrupt peace and harmony in the state, DGP Yadav said. He added that the arrest and recovery have thwarted a major criminal conspiracy, and further arrests and seizures are expected in the coming days. Amritsar Commissioner of Police (CP) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar stated that acting on credible intelligence, a police team led by DCP (Detective) Ravinderpal Singh, ADCP-2 Harpal Singh, and ACP (West) Shivdarshan Singh conducted a covert operation. The team from Chheharta Police Station apprehended Amit Singh while he was en route to deliver the arms consignment. CP Bhullar disclosed that the accused was collecting weapons dropped via drones at locations specified by his Pakistan-based handlers.
