Mumbai, Aug 25 (UNI) India is facing a silent cancer epidemic, said renowned cancer surgeon Dr Sultan Pradhan here. Speaking on the second foundation day of Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Head & Neck Cancer Institute of India (HNCII), Dr Pradhan said that while advanced surgical innovations like the submental flap have transformed outcomes, the need of the hour is clear - stronger prevention campaigns, early detection programs, and more specialised centers to tackle this enormous public health challenge. He said that head and neck cancers constitute 27-30 percent of all cancers in India, in stark contrast to less than 5 percent in Western countries. With more than 200,000 new cases annually, largely linked to tobacco use, the real crisis is that nearly 60 percent are detected at advanced stages. Stressing the urgency of change, Dr Pradhan said that an awareness and prevention campaign is the need of the hour. On this occasion, HNCII also launched a landmark book on the evolution and global relevance of the submental flap in oral cancer reconstruction.
