Chennai, Aug 25 (UNI) Taking exception to the State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) granting permission for ONGC for oil and gas exploration in Ramanathauram district, the Tamil Nadu government today said it would never allow any hydrocarbon project in the state and that Chief Minister M K Stalin was firm on it. The government has also directed the SEIAA to withdraw the clearance granted to the ONGC for digging wells for hydrocarbon exploration, soon after it came to its attention. As the news came to light, leaders of various political parties, including the alliance parties of the ruling DMK, like MDMK, urged the government to reconsider its decision and withdraw the permission granted to ONGC for exploration. In a statement here following reports that SEIAA, which is functioning under the Union Environment Ministry, has given the nod for drilling onshore exploratory wells at 20 locations in the district, Tamil Nadu Minister for Finance, Environment and Climate Change and Forests Thangam Thennarasu said the state government would never allow any hydrocarbon project in any part of the state either now or in the future. "The firm policy of Mr Stalin is not to allow any hydocarbon related project in any part of Tamil Nadu considering the interests of farmers and the public", he said. "Hence, not only now, even in future the TN government will never allow any hydrocarbon related project in any part of the State", the Minister categorically said. Mr Thennarasu also pointed out that Government had enacted the Protected Agricutlural Zone - PAZ Act on February 20, 2020, declring the Cauvery Delta Region, the lifeline of farmers, as a Protected Agricultural Zone. This Act bans exploration of hydrocarbons, besides Natural Gas, Coal-based Methane and Shale Gas in the Delta districts of Thmanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai and Cuddalore.
