Officials Step Up Vigil To Curb Urea Misuse In Ongole

NELLORE: With urea supplies meant for agriculture facing the risk of diversion to industries, officials in Prakasam district have been asked to step up surveillance and carry out inspections across multiple sectors. According to the agriculture department, the district requires 54,468 metric tonnes of urea for the current kharif season (April-August). So far, 34,051 MT has been supplied, of which 30,565 MT has already been sold. Another 30,597 MT remains available for farmers. Departments have now been tasked with conducting checks on AD Blue manufacturing units, as well as plywood, resin, paints and varnish units, where misuse of subsidised urea is suspected. Vigilance, police, and transport officials have also been instructed to maintain round-the-clock checks along state borders to stop unauthorised movement of fertilizers. The strategy was drawn up at a district-level coordination committee meeting in Ongole, where senior officers from agriculture, industries, labour, excise, civil supplies and pollution control departments participated. Presiding over the meeting, district collector Smt. A. Tameem Ansaria underlined the importance of protecting fertiliser meant for farmers. She directed all departments to work in close coordination and submit comprehensive reports to ensure that every tonne of urea reaches its rightful purpose -- supporting agriculture in the district.
