Shillong, Aug 19 (UNI) The North East Students' Organisation (NESO), an apex student's body of all the indigenous communities in the region, has written to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma over the long-standing, unaddressed, and escalating issue of illegal migration into the region. In a letter, NESO Chairman Samuel Jyrwa and Secretary General Mutsikhoyo Yhobu said the North East has been grappling with the challenge of uncontrolled and unchecked influx of illegal migrants for decades. "This problem (illegal migrants) began soon after India attained Independence in 1947 and has, over time, grown into one of the most pressing threats to the socio-cultural fabric, demographic balance, and political stability of our states. The consequences have been devastating," NESO said. Calling the situation an "existential crisis," the students' organisation urged the Meghalaya government to adopt a series of steps, including immediate detection and deportation of illegal migrants, sealing of the India-Bangladesh border, and strengthening surveillance with modern technology. NESO also sought the formation of a special review committee to examine population growth patterns in sensitive areas. Urging the central government and all concerned state governments to treat this issue with the seriousness and urgency it demands, the organisation cited the example of Tripura where the indigenous people, once the overwhelming majority, have now been reduced to a minority in their own ancestral land. Assam too has suffered immensely, leading to the historic six-year-long anti-foreigners' movement that culminated in the signing of the Assam Accord in 1985. Yet, despite the sacrifices and struggles of countless individuals, the promises of this accord have not been fully realised, and illegal migration continues unabated," Jyrwa and Yhobu said. "Meghalaya has faced repeated waves of agitation -- in 1979, 1987, and the early 1990s -- all triggered by the fear of demographic displacement and the erosion of indigenous rights," they further pointed out. Stating that the illegal migration has only deepened and Assam is witnessing the radical change in the demographic structure of the state, NESO said, "This shift in demographics is not confined to one state -- it is spilling over into others, notably into the plain belt areas of Garo Hills in Meghalaya, as well as other parts of the North East." Describing central government's responses to the illegal migration issue have been "inadequate" and "limited to temporary or reactionary steps measures", the organisation said, "The absence of decisive action has left the indigenous peoples vulnerable, and in many cases, they have been forced to fend for themselves in protecting their rights, culture, and identity." However, NESO said it remains committed to working with the Centre and state governments for a "concrete and decisive solution" to safeguard the future of the North East and its people from this onslaught. Urging the central government and all concerned state governments to treat this issue with the seriousness and urgency it demands, the powerful students' body said, "The demographic and cultural changes already visible in parts of our region are warnings of an existential crisis. If strong and sustained measures are not taken now, the very identity of the North East's indigenous peoples could be irreversibly altered."
