New Delhi: A day after facing criticism from the Delhi High Court, Delhi govt on Wednesday informed the court that it has suspended nine Tihar Jail officials for allegedly running an extortion racket in collusion with inmates.The govt assured a bench of chief justice D K Upadhyaya and justice Tushar Rao Gedela that strict disciplinary action was initiated against the officials, who were placed under suspension and transferred as per rules.It also sought an additional two months to file its action taken report in the case. Earlier, the high court had directed the CBI to register an FIR after finding merit in allegations of an extortion ring operating from Tihar Jail, facilitated by inmates' access to mobile phones."Having regard to the averments made in the application, further eight weeks is granted to the Home Department of Delhi govt to submit the report," the bench said, posting the matter for Oct 28. On that date, both the CBI and Delhi govt will present their reports. The court also asked the govt to issue an advisory to all jails in Delhi -- including Tihar, Mandoli, and Rohini -- to prevent such incidents.The high court is hearing a petition filed by a former inmate, now out on bail, alleging extortion and safety lapses inside Tihar.The court was shocked by an inquiry report from an inspecting judge who verified the allegations. The HC ordered the CBI to conduct a preliminary inquiry. The report included call data records between persons outside and inside the jail, and misuse of the jail's official landline to "promote nefarious activities."The judge's report, submitted in a sealed cover, revealed "very disturbing facts" pointing to criminal activities and irregularities in Tihar Jail's functioning.Earlier this week, the CBI submitted sealed findings indicating inmate and jail official involvement in illegal and corrupt activities, prompting the HC to order an FIR. The court described the findings as "astonishing", requiring prompt and serious govt action.The HC reiterated its May 2 order for Delhi Home Department's principal secretary to conduct a fact-finding inquiry to identify officials responsible for administrative lapses.
